Yes place your container on the scale and press Tare it will zero the scale with your container.

The lid does lay flat I put larger objects on mine with no ptoblem at all. A small plate should be fine the bowl will need to be small to take account of the maximum weight the scales can manage.

If the scale is not measuring correctly, Please ensure that scale is placed on flat surface. Do the calibration and then use it to do weight.
