OK, book, has a few new tricks

This series doesn't read smoothly - its painful to keep going. Every now and then I learn something new that is useful. A lot of the book I am currently reading is just opinion on what someone likes or doesn't like which is not that helpful to me. I guess real bush craft just depends on you going out and making some mistakes - you learn fast what works or doesn't work when you are miserable. The best advice I can offer is start with short trips, stay DRY if its cold out, spend time preparing a good camp and THINK about where you set up a tent and sleep... Insects and weather can make your choice very interesting. Always have a sturdy knife, a compass (and know how to use it), a topographical map, and lots of clean water. Dress in layers because while backpacking you can go from freezing cold to too hot as the day progresses and you change in altitude.Another tip - ALWAYS have an exit plan. You just never know when events are going to make your trip more than just interesting - Fire, Flood, Injury, Criminals... Always know how you will remove yourself from an area if your path in or forward become untenable.

A Lot of Money for Very Little

I was so happy when my order arrived but was so disappointed after I started reading the books. First, his recipe for what he calls pemmican is NOT pemmican! Pemmican is made with tallow and NOT lard! Second, it is made with dry lean meat and not beef jerky! Second, his reloading information may just get you killed or injured. Third, some of his traps will not work. Fourth, much of the information is redundant. Why do I need the same information repeated in more than one book? Fith, the first aid info is rather light. Sith, there is very little information on edible plants. Yes, there is some information but it is scant. Why would a book on bushcraft have no information about preparing pelts? The author did lie about his military service and as an army brat that upsets me to no end. The book does have some good information but it is nothing better than a starting point. I would recommend some of the following, "10 Bushcraft Books", The books by Creek Stwert and "Shacks, Shanties" instead of this book. If it was not for the fact that I am both a reader and book collector I would have sent this book back for a refund.

Not just for survivalist

Lots of commonly available information all in a single set. Depending on your experience level it could be overwhelming or common knowledge but even in the most remedial case having it in print could still be helpful. Anyone who has encountered stressful situations can be reassured by having a backup to their brain bank. As far as the writing goes, it is written at a very basic level with terms and phrases that should not alienate the most novice. Even if you are not planning for the end of the world anyone who spends time outdoors can benefit for this. You never know when you or a hiking partner could get hurt or when your car could break down in a remote location.

Great way to learn what you need to survive

Ok, if you were never in the "Scouts" or you were but didn't actually learn anything other then how to correctly fold a flag then this whole series of books is your you. This is the complete collection from over the years and has everything you need to know to survive. Even the "advanced" sections aren't really that advanced, so if you are an actual survivalist this is a waste of time. If you need a good foundation and know what you need to "get by" this is what you want.

Not for the "hard core".............

Well, theres alot of common knowledge in these books, and some stuff to make you say, "huh, that should work." All in all, a good buy. I got these to brush up a bit myself, and help show my family some basic/intermediate survival skills on our next camping trip. For my needs these are perfect. Plus, even if you don't need them, we all know "that guy" (or girl) who would love this set as a gift. To the survival purest, the hard core 4 week camper, would I advise to buy?? No. But the average Joe or us who knows a little bit but could know more... buy it. Worth the money, and great information for the novice or someone who is interested in the art of bushcraft.

Great Books

If your a beginner to Bushcraft and wilderness, then these are a "Must-Have". If your intermediate then your still bound to learn a lot from these books and they are small enough to put the whole set in your pack with plenty of room for everything else. When I "Pack-Out" I wear Web Gear, 75L pack and a 2 Liter waist pack. It's better to have a larger pack and not fill it then have a 50L pack and not have enough room for your essentials. Secure your sleeping bag to the strapping on the bottom of your pack. Your completed pack (when worn) should extend from the middle of your head to no lower than your knee (including your sleeping bag) and only weigh about 50 lbs. (which isn't much).

Impulse buy for when the world ends

Why did I buy this? Like really, is the world going to be taken over by zombies anytime soon? Probably not, and if they did, I'd want to be one any way.So, nuclear war? Very possible given the state of things. Then I can see myself using this.Hackers, shutting down all power. Bingo! Now we're talking everyone on earth not being able to shop on amazon. World will come to an end just by that. That's it, I'm moving to the forest.

Smaller than you think

Packable. Perfect.

Good Collection

Exactly what I expected, with some clear and nice instructions to follow. There is some cross over of information in the books but that's a minor issue when you consider the overall box set.
