Steepletone Penguin Shower Radio - Red

I was very disappointed with this product, having read the mostly positive reviews about it, and have had to return it. It is attractive and sat on the shower wall OK. However, the radio was impossible to tune... you have to rotate a flipper to turn it, but the stations are so close together, even a micro-turn would detune it (that is, if we were able to tune it in the first place). We tried it in lots of different areas of the house, but at best, got it tuned with lots of white noise; at worst, we couldn't find the station at all. Even just turning it off and on again detuned it. Then there was the volume, which was meant to be adjusted by rotating a foot... we found it was either much too loud, or off... nothing in between. I don't understand why we had these problems as the other reviews seemed to be more positive, but for me it was unusable. We've replaced it with a normal portable radio (not waterproof) which is the same size but gives a much better quality sound.

My old bathroom radio broke so I chose the Penguin Radio because of its looks. The children loved the design, the fins and feet are the controls, and the little alarm button on the life belt is for when you run out of toilet paper. It is a fun radio to look at and I wish it worked, but it dosent. It has a weak AM and virtually no FM. I only found two FM channels and they faded as soon as I took my hand off the radio. This sugests the lack of ariel is the problem. My old radio with an ariel worked fine. I tried another type of shower radio and that was just as bad. I went back to a small radio with an ariel which gets a perfect signal in the same location. Its not waterproof, so may suffer like my old one, but at least it works. Im glad some customers found their Penguin Radio worked but mine didnt, and I think the lack of an ariel is a design fault.AMAZON sent me a request to review this product recently. I was very happy with both service, presentation, packaging and delivery of this radio which I bought to update the one I've had for 15 years. I was also very pleased with the look of the happy penguin. But when I switched it on I was very disappointed with the quality of the sound and signal. It reminded me of the little transistor radios we had in the early 60's. I put up with it for 3 or 4 days but have now reverted back to my original and put this in my box of bits to take to a charity shop. It works but only poorly.

This is a great bathroom radio, especially for the price. When it arrived it was bigger than expected so it needs a bit of space. It doesn't stay stuck to the tiles with the sucker (but these things never really do) but it comes with a cord to hang it from and that does the job fine. It also took a while to work out how to turn it on and off and went through a lot of batteries before discovering you have to push the goggles in, but that problem is now resolved. The quality of the sound is much better than expected (and that's the most important thing after all), the last bathroom radio I had was a similar price but the sound was pretty bad. I'd definately recommend this to anyone looking for a budget bathroom radio, it's the best one of it's type I've had.

I bought this as a Christmas present for a man "who has everything". The plastic figure is attractively designed and the design is certainly novel. However, the FM radio reception is not very good. Tuning is critical and the radio needs to be positioned carefully to get the best reception. As an engineer I wouldn't really have expected a great performance. Most FM radios have a long telescopic aerials which are directional. In this radio the aerial is contained withn its small volume.I would expect reception to be improved in areas which are closer to transmitters. To summarise, don't expect reception from this radio to be as good as from your normal portables with long telescopic aerials.

I bought this after a previous shower radio I bought on Amazon did not work at all. Although I loved the fun element, the power button is not immediately obvious (the goggles on the top) and once I had attached it to the wall with the suckers when I went to press it the suckers failed and it fell off the wall into the bath, smashing the foot. This then happened the next time, but this time the goggles smashed. Although the product still works I have now had to repair it twice, and having the power button on the top really is a design flaw. If it was on the front then you would not be putting as much strain on the suckers and it would probably stay stuck to the wall.

I bought a 'novelty fish' radio for bathroom use about 10 years ago. It cost about £10 and it's been used almost daily ever since. So why change? Well, it's fallen off the tiled wall into the bath a couple of times recently. The suction cups aren't gripping quite as well as they did. But the main problem is the volume control dial snapped in half and seems to have affected both volume and quality.The 'fish' design is no longer available, so I took a punt on penguin. He's great. Bit bigger than expected, but he looks amazing. Sound quality won't match Bose or Sony in other rooms, but for what we want, it's great. Radio1, 2, 4 and a number of local stations available in a poor reception area. A single volume control dial and a tuning dial make it simple to use. It's absolutely fine for purpose. Cheery, bright, cheap and delivers sound in the bathroom.The suction cups have held it firmly in place, it tuned in as anticipated and it provides background radio to enjoy whilst bathing or showering. Delivers in every way and I'm delighted.

Really liked the look of this item for use in our bathroom, unfortunately we couldn't get a good reception in any of the places we wanted it to go. When the radio was moved into a good reception area it performed really well and sound quality was good, however, this only happened in places we really didn't want to have a penguin radio.As Amazon's return policy and on-line returns system is really good you could always try the little fella out and if he doesn't work where you want him to.. just send him back.
